[08:42] Which metrics (DR, DA, or TF) should be considered for more authority or power for contextual backlinks? What would be a good range for authority?
We like Ahrefs. We use DR and never use CF or TF. We don’t use Semrush even though we know it’s grown in popularity lately. Everything can be considered a good range for authority. The higher the authority, the better. But, natural websites get links of all different authority levels, and so should your site.
[20:37] (site audit) It’s a 1+-year-old blog started with a fresh domain. I did everything on this website: built it, created post structure, optimized for SEO, did keyword research, all articles written by me, and got some good backlinks with only guest posts and link insertions (all free; I haven’t paid a cent).
You have 135 indexed pages on what seems like a newspaper-style website. On-page is great. It looks nice and clean. If you’re not monetized already, plan on investing in a content writer or getting some backlinking done. Double down on what you’re already doing and stay the course, and you’ll do better than most.
[38:07] I have been able to get a free backlink from a website. It’s a low comp but still a backlink. She asked if she could contribute the article to my website, as in my given name. What are the pros and the cons of writing in the website’s pseudonym as opposed to the blog owner’s name?
The best thing to do is to use a name that is associated with the website—some sort of entity for Google to associate with your domain. The only thing that matters is that people can look up your name in the SERPs and the money site pops up.
[42:49] What are your favorite free SEO tools?
SEO Minion, MozBar, and Keywords Everywhere (not free, but so cheap and useful that it’s practically free!). Paid tools would be Ahrefs and Surfer SEO. Useful free non-SEO tools we like are Loom, Quip, Grammarly, Answer the Public, GTmetrix, and Wayback Machine; and plugins such as Google Analytics, Search Console, Page Speed Insights, and Yoast or Rank Math. Google in itself is an insane free tool for SEOs because you can get so much out of just typing in keywords on Google and analyzing the top websites that come up.
[53:40] (site audit) Only 335 pages have been indexed by Google. About 400 pages have been crawled by Google but not indexed for some reason. None of the community 720 pages are ranking well, but competitors are ranking at the top for these terms. Can you review my website SEO in comparison to my competitor’s? How can I compete when he is using spam links? What budget will I need for my backlinks to compete with his?
You’re in the real estate niche, which is one of the most competitive niches on the internet. You have five referring domains (i.e. backlinks from nine sites), which tells me that you need to start building authority. Otherwise, you simply won’t rank. You can figure everything else out later. Also, this website uses an MLS which functions off of a subdomain, and content seems auto-generated from the MLS. In fact, the website as a whole feels completely auto-generated. It will help to have geographic-based SERPs that you can write informational articles about. As far as backlinks go, you have a long way to go. That’s the way it is. I would not recommend using spam like your competitor is, because you run the risk of your entire project running into the ground and being unable to recover it. Finally, in a niche this competitive, I would start learning how to run ads to your site. This will help you target people who are looking for homes in specific areas.
